There are two types of leaders: The leader that desires to be a leader before a follower and the leader that desired to be a follower before a leader.
The one who leads before following usually leads from a place of self-absorption. They’re interests are solely connected to their individual person. It’s all about their ideas, goals, motives successes and failures. The drum beats to his or her rhythm with no compromise.
“How can this person push MY dream forward?”
The second has become a leader in the most organic way. The foundation of being a follower was laid first. They understand order and how to take direction. As a result of being a follower first, this individual has been taught the lesson called “patience.” Their selfless attribute is the key that unlocks the door for leadership opportunities. This is a SERVANT LEADER!
“What can I as a leader do to help this individual succeed?”
MARCUS – Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Adam came not to be ministered (served) unto, but to minister (serve), and to give his life a ransom for many.
What are some characteristics of a SERVANT LEADER?
Sense of Collectivity: The SL has the ability to bring people together in order to achieve individual objectives. They understand that more can be accomplished together than apart, working in one accord vs. being divided. 1Corinthians 1:10 (KJV), Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of Yahusha Hamashiach, that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Sounding Board: The SL understands the importance of listening. When one follows 1st, they are either under the tutelage of someone with more knowledge, or they are being lead by someone who has been placed in the leadership role to manage. Both require the follower to be a good listener. This attribute becomes one of the building blocks for the follower when they are given the opportunity to lead. The SL becomes a sounding board for others, helping to build confidence and trust in others. They also know how to alleviate problems in a healthy and compassionate way. Proverbs 19:20 (KJV), Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. Proverbs 2:2 (KJV), So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine ear to understanding. James 1:19 (KJV), Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
Overseer: SLs are considerate of other people’s time, monetary resources, individual people involved in the organization the overall livelihood of the mission in which they oversee. Although those whom they oversee are accountable to them, they are also accountable to those whom they oversee. A SL has been found faithful, because after all, it is a requirement. 1Corinthians 4:2 (KJV), Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
Establish Advancement Opportunities: SLs prefer the environment around them to be a learning environment, one that encourages the expansion of knowledge and resources which in turn create opportunities for others.
MARCUS – Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and said unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
